Mumble, Mumble, Mumble
Mumble - the open source VoIP software
Mumble is an open source, low-latency, high quality voice chat software primarily intended for use while gaming
I have used a number of VoIP solutions for general communications & gaming communications with recording functionality, including:
- TeamSpeak
- Ventrilo
- Skype
- FaceTime on Mac
- Along with a smattering of others
Mumble
I have been using Mumble for a few weeks, semi-professionally, but not for a lot of work.
I am very impressed with what it has been able to do for my workload.
I have used it to record game plays, normal voice-overs, communications with friends & fellow gamers.
It has responded very well to a lot of the latency involved with communications from the US to a UK based server.
I have found no latency in my home network, which is important as I am recording the VoIP data to a SAN with PCIe flash.
I would like to point out the client application is easy to use, but the server would be easier to navigate and configure for a more experienced user or network administrator. Customising the server is not very complex and does offer great flexibility to the users.
Mumble... Mumble... Mumble... No Grumble
I am very impressed with Mumble - it will be replacing all of my personal Ventrillo & TeamSpeak servers - I will host Ventrilo and TeamSpeak servers for customers in the future when my data centre is up and running.
I can easily recommend Mumble as a professional VoIP solution & I would recommend it to any gamers who want to set up a game server & a VoIP server. I am unable to comment on costs of a virtual server or cloud server hosting for Mumble, but I would think it would be similar to Ventrilo & TeamSpeak hosting packages.
